FoRD Statement on Dictatorship

August 17, 20200

STOP SLIDE TO DICTATORSHIP FOR REVENUE SHARING

This is a dark day for Kenya reminiscent of the past when MPs were picked from the precincts of Parliament and from their houses to submit them and intimidate others.

It reminds us of the JM, Shikuku, Mark Mwithiga days; Anyona and Kathangu days in the eighties and nineties. We therefore condemn in the strongest terms possible the strong arm tactics and dictatorial tendencies exhibited by the government into what is an attempt to beat the so-called Team Kenya senators into submission and support the government motion on revenue sharing in the Senate.

Such barbaric and primitive acts such as night time raids to MPs’ homes, preferring frivolous charges on lawmakers opposed to government agenda belong to backward politics of the past. The many Kenyans who suffered under dictatorial and despotic regimes in Kenya who fought for expanded political space, leading to the 2010 constitution, are greatly perturbed.

We ask those who suffered humiliations in the past and involved in state craft today not to give a blind eye to the present developments as it may turn against them. Votes are won on the floor of the House by persuasion, not through intimidation.

The relevant House committees, Ombudsman and Inspector General of Police, and Director of Public Prosecutions must quickly investigate the events surrounding the arrests of Senators today.
